  • Coronavirus Update - 11th May 2020

Mon 11 May 2020 Michael Watson

    Dear Parents and Carers,

As you are no doubt aware, the prime minister addressed the nation last night about the Covid-19 lockdown.  During his address, he stated that children in Reception and Years One and Six could go back to school from the 1st of June at the earliest.

I am sure that you have many questions following last night’s statement.  At present, I am not yet in a position to provide answers or information as I am awaiting advice from the Department for Education about how and when schools will be opened safely to children and how social distancing rules will work in a school setting.  I want to reassure you that once that advice has been made available to schools, I will be in a position to give you further updates.

However, at this present time and for the short term, nothing has changed.  The school remains closed to the overwhelming majority of its pupils and is only open to provide childcare to key workers.  Work will continue to be set by teachers and posted on our Class Dojo site, unless other arrangements have been made.

I apologise that I am unable as yet to give you any answers or information about the reopening of the school and want to reassure you that any decision that I will make will have the safety of your child and our school staff at its heart.

    Yours faithfully,

  • OFSTED report published

    Fri 02 Feb 2018

The report for our OFSTED inspection, which happened on the 11th January this year, has now been published on our website at: http://www.kilkhampton.cornwall.sch.uk/ofsted-and-performance-data/

It can also be found in the 'Letters Home' section by clicking on the 'News and Events' button.

Her Majesty’s Inspector, Nathan Kemp, spent a day at the school and also looked at our website, our assessment data and looked at survey results from parents, pupils and staff. He spoke to me, Mrs Moyle, as SENCo, and visited the children in their lessons. He also talked to the children, looked at their books and interviewed the school’s governors.

We were praised for effective safeguarding of our pupils, our investment in reading resources and the approach we take to encourage a love of reading. We are delighted with the report and the recognition of the work done by the team at this school.

In his report Mr Kemp said:

    · “This is a caring school community which is aspirational for all pupils and the community it serves.”

    · “You have an astute understanding of the strengths and weaknesses across the school, acting decisively and with success when changes or improvements are required. The pupils are central to every decision you make.”

    · “The school environment is rich in safeguarding materials, reminding staff of their responsibilities to keep children safe and communicate concerns that they may have to the relevant leaders. Leaders have also promoted safeguarding on the school website, another example of how safeguarding children is of utmost importance to you and your team. As a result, parents and staff are unanimous that children are safe. Pupils agree.”

    · “Teachers know their pupils extremely well and provide well-informed challenges to help pupils further improve. Where pupils require additional support, interventions are of a high quality and provide pupils with opportunities to apply what they have learned in a positive learning environment.”

    · “Pupils have access to a rich and varied book stock, value the books available and enjoy the choices they have. As a result, pupils love to read. They speak passionately about their favourite books and authors and can discuss their reasons for selecting books.”

“During one session that we watched, one pupil found a part of the story she was reading particularly funny and was desperate to share this moment with her classmates. Such is the love of reading that all were interested in her retelling of this funny moment in the book.”

As already mentioned, the full report can be read by visiting the 'Letters Home' section or the OFSTED and Performance Data section of the website.

  • London Residential Update June 2017

Tue 06 Jun 2017 Michael Watson
    Dear Parents/Carers,

    London Residential 2017

Thank you for responding to my letter that I sent yesterday.  Due to the tragic events in London at the weekend, the overwhelming majority of parents no longer wish their children to take part in the London residential.  Therefore, the residential will no longer go ahead.

I apologise if you wanted your child to take part but am sure you understand that the numbers who wished to go were too small to make the trip viable.  Furthermore, although current guidance from the Home Office is that trips to London may still go ahead, the local authority, whilst allowing trips to continue at the moment, is recommending individual schools make decisions that are right for them following consultations with parents.

I understand that the London residential was the last chance for children in the current Year Six to have a memorable trip with their classmates, so we are currently planning some activities and experiences which will take place instead of the cancelled trip to London.  These experiences will take place at or close to school, yet I hope that they will still give your children some great memories.

Obviously with the cancelling of the trip I will start the process of trying to recoup money the school has paid out.  I will be in contact in the next few days with details of any refunds we will be able to offer and how these will be arranged.

As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to come and see me, send me an email or give me a call.

Thank you for your continued support in what has been an understandably worrying time for you and your families.

    Yours faithfully,

  • RNLI Beach Safety Presentation

    Wed 19 Apr 2017
Children in Years 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 had a visit from RNLI lifeguards today. The children learnt about how to keep safe on the beach and in the water.  They learnt about the different types of flags used on the beach and how the lifeguards keep them safe. Children also had a chance to dress up as a lifeguard and take part in roleplay activities.  Pictures of the presentation can be found in 'Latest Pictures from the School' by clicking on the 'News and Events' tab.
  • Pirate FM Workshop in Years 5 and 6

    Wed 29 Mar 2017

Yesterday the children in Crooklets and Summerleaze classes learnt to be media professionals.  We were visited by a team from Pirate FM who worked with the children to market and create advertising for the chocolate bars they have designed and created in Design and Technology.

The children had a fantastic time.  Please have a look at the pictures from the day in the Class News part of the 'Children' section as well as under 'Latest Pictures from the School,' which can be found by clicking the 'News and Events' tab.
