‘The principal aim of religious education is to explore what people believe and what difference this makes to how they live, so that pupils can gain the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to handle questions raised by religion and belief, reflecting on their own ideas and ways of living.’
— Cornwall Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education, 2020
Our Religious Education curriculum is adopted from the Cornwall Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education 2020.
The principal aim of religious education is to explore what people believe and what difference this makes to how they live, so that pupils can gain the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to handle questions raised by religion and belief, reflecting on their own ideas and ways of living.
We seek to equip children with the knowledge and skills to answer challenging questions, explore different religious beliefs, values and traditions and develop a more rigorous understanding of the numerous religious traditions, beliefs and practices that are followed in our multicultural society and around the world. We want children to know how religious education promotes discernment and enables them to combat prejudice, preparing them for adult life.
All children are entitled to the full curriculum regardless of their age, their ability or their underlying needs. This will enable all children to acquire more knowledge in all curriculum areas through their time at the school.
At Kilkhampton have a statutory responsibility to deliver religious education to all pupils, except those withdrawn by parents. Religious Education is delivered thoroughly weekly timetabled lessons as well as through some class topics and our programme of assemblies and collective worship.
At the start of each unit, teachers establish the starting point for each child and ensure that all lessons taught are developmental, and consideration is given to how greater depth will be reached, as well as how learners will be supported.
In RE, by the end of each key stage, pupils are expected to know, understand and apply the concepts, skills and processes specified in the relevant Programme of Study, as in all subjects of the curriculum. The expectation is that pupils’ achievement will be weighed up by teachers using criteria arising from the Programmes of Study.
